In a world where education often feels prescriptive, spoon-feeding information and ideas, Team Academy for Social Change (TASC) took a different approach in a recent communication skills workshop for young people at The Network—Lincoln’s dedicated careers advice and guidance service for those aged 16 and up. Over the course of two days, TASC delivered a unique, participant-directed experience, transforming the traditional "sage on the stage" model into one where young people were fully in charge of their learning journey.
Led by TASC’s Head Coach, Andy Farenden, this workshop focused not only on teaching communication skills but on empowering participants to find their authentic voices and build the confidence to express themselves. As Andy explained, “At the heart of our mission is a deep belief in the transformative power of human-centered coaching—helping individuals discover their true, authentic voices.”
Shifting the Model: Participant-Led, Coach-Supported
In designing the workshop, TASC set out to do more than just deliver information; they created a space where young people could shape each session according to their own goals, questions, and needs. This participant-directed approach meant that every activity, discussion, and learning moment was adaptable, giving young people the freedom to steer the sessions in ways that resonated with them. From exploring body language and active listening to crafting impactful messages, each topic was driven by the participants' own interests and priorities.
According to Andy, this approach made all the difference: “Our work with the young people at The Network was a powerful reminder of just how essential it is to let them take the lead in their own growth.” By handing over the reins, TASC enabled the participants to not only learn about communication but to actively develop and practice their skills in real time.
Building Confidence Through Authenticity
One of the workshop's core goals was to help each young person discover their authentic voice—a powerful tool that lies at the heart of effective communication. Rather than simply teaching them what to say, TASC focused on helping participants understand who they are and what they want to express. This emphasis on authenticity created an environment where young people felt encouraged to explore their own perspectives, share their thoughts openly, and ultimately build a deeper sense of confidence.
The shift in engagement was remarkable, with participants stepping up to ask questions, practice in front of their peers, and provide feedback to one another. This collaborative atmosphere encouraged a supportive, judgment-free environment where young people felt safe to try new approaches, make mistakes, and grow.
The Impact of Human-Centered Coaching
Reflecting on the workshop, Andy emphasized the unique impact of human-centered coaching in empowering young people: “By adapting responsively to their needs, we witnessed a profound shift in their engagement and confidence. It reinforced the truth that when young people are empowered to steer their own development, the impact is truly transformative.”
This human-centered approach prioritizes individual strengths, personal growth, and self-discovery, rather than adhering to a rigid curriculum. By allowing participants to set the pace and direct their own learning, TASC cultivated a deeper sense of ownership and engagement among the young people in attendance. They didn’t just learn about communication skills; they developed an understanding of how to leverage those skills in a way that feels natural and empowering.
A Transformative Learning Experience
The workshop was more than a lesson in communication—it was an invitation for young people to lead their own journeys toward personal and professional growth. By creating a flexible, responsive, and participant-led environment, TASC provided a space where the young people at The Network could explore their potential and embrace the power of their authentic voices.
This experience left a lasting impact, not only on the participants but also on the TASC team. As Andy remarked, “We had the privilege of creating a space where they could define what they truly wanted from each session. When young people are empowered to steer their own development, the impact is truly transformative.”
Looking Ahead
TASC’s innovative approach at The Network underscores the value of human-centered coaching in the development of essential life skills. As they continue to work with young people across Lincoln, TASC remains dedicated to empowering individuals to take charge of their learning and embrace their unique potential.
